Titleholders Not Defending

New country tennis titleholders will be found this year because the championships began at Wilding Park yesterday without L. Elliott, of North Canterbury, and Miss H. Bruce, of MidCanterbury, who won last year. Two Banks Peninsula men, W. G. Lewthwaite and L. G. Milne have the top seedings for the men’s singles and Mrs N. Skilling, of Ellesmere, is seeded top of the women. Lewthwaite has not won the title but he has been runner-up before. Milne did not have a singles yesterday but Lewthwaite had a tough match with W. Wyllie, recent winner of the North Canterbury title. Lewthwaite won, 6-2, 8-6, but he found it hard to get control in the second set.

Entries in the open sections are much the same as usual but they are slightly down in the under-19 sections. Under--15 sections will be held also when the tournament is completed next Saturday and Sunday and more entries will be taken for these. Results: Men's Singles First Round.—S. Bennett beat W.
