EQUALLED RECORD

Sir Dane Wins At Caulfield (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand-bred Sir ■Dane joined the champion ranks by winning the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield and equalling the race-record on Saturday. It was a great effort, for Sir Dane at his previous two starts had won at 10 furlongs, run second to Yangtze at nine furlongs, and today come back to seven furlongs—a feat beyond most horses.

Sir Dane, which began his run three furlongs out, moved into third place at the home turn and soon after joined the leaders. Once he got there he was inclined to shift about and R. Higgins had to straighten him up a couple of times, and under the whip he had Nicopolis beaten well before the post.

Sir Dane ran the seven furlongs in 1:23.4, which equalled the time of Todamn (1960) and Aquanita (1962). He beat Nicopolis by a length and a half with Brandy Lad a similar distance away third. His trainer, R. Shaw, has now confirmed the weight-for-age programme for Sir Dane this autumn in Melbourne. The horse will run in the Queen’s Plate at Flemington next Saturday and then in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes before he leaves to race in Sydney at the A.J.C. spring meeting.
