Ravenwood Fastest In Te Aroha Leg

(N.Z. Press Association) TE AROHA. Ravenwood, which was never further back than fourth at any stage, came home strongly to win the Herries Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Te Aroha on Saturday. Ravenwood scored by a length from Hi-Minx, with a length and a half back to High Mark, which was followed home by Tax Free, Fencourt and Blue Beard. Lipton, High Minx, Ravenwood, Tatua, and Fencourt were the leaders after the field had travelled a furlong. Passing the six-furlong peg Tatua had taken over the lead from Lipton and they were followed by HiMinx, Ravenwood and Fencourt. At the turn Tatua was still in front from Lipton, with Ravenwood, Hi-Minx, Irishman and High Mark handy. In the Hot Springs Handicap, the second leg of the double, Yonda, Hilldale, Kitty Kildare and Bright Idea were the early leaders. With four furlongs to go Te Pari Chat streaked into a two lengths lead, followed by Nassella, Yonda, Hilldale, Kitty Kildare, Good Day Peter, and Overdale. Half way down the straight Nassella headed Te Pari Chat, but Hilldale challenged strongly and carried on to win by half a length from Nassella, with Kitty Kildare, Yonda and Te Pari Chat in that order. An inquiry was held on the running of the Herries Memorial Handicap and K. A. Nuttall, the rider of Hi-Minx, was found Sot careless riding causing erence to Fencourt (G. R. Edge) and Umpah (G. L. Willetts) passing the five furlongs. Nuttall, who rode three winners, two seconds and a third at the meeting, was suspended up to and including March 20. G. M. Carson, the rider of Bronze Dawn in the Ruakaka High-weight, was fined £2 for failing to report broken gear. Results:—
