Empyreus Wins First Leg

Empyreus, the Hastings three-year-old, showed his class by the way he romped away to a five lengths victory in the £l2OO Wattie Canneries Gold Cup, the feature event and first leg of the T.A.B. double on the concluding day of th‘e Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting on Saturday. R. W. Taylor had Empyreus in a challenging position at the straight entrance where Paper Kiwi was two lengths clear. The top-weight caught Paper Kiwi at the furlong and surged on to win without being extended. The second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Tolaga Bay Handicap, was won by Fontamara. On - course investments amounted to £41,290 10s, compared with £34,450 last year.
