FIRMER TRACK
Wendy Dawn Decisive First (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN. Wendy Dawn, which had a kneeboot slip and caused her to break last Wednesday, appreciated the firmer footing and ran out a decisive winner in the Adelaide Handicap at Forbury on Saturday. She worked to the lead after, three furlongs and was not afterwards headed. Although hotly challenged by Society Maid in the straight, she ran on best to win by a short length and a half from Jilaire, which received an Interrupted run.
Belle Vue, prominent throughout, was a fair fourth, ahead of the firm favourite, Doctor Barry, which was under pressure a long way from home. Sentimental was beaten off
sixth, clear of Golden Ego. Grande Garnison and Kinsella lost all chance at the start while Doctor Barry and Robyn gave ground.
Cloudy Bay, at odds of more than 20 to 1, upset calculations in the Three and Four-Year-Old Challenge Stakes. Cloudy Bay was sixth when the field settled down and he moved up sharply .to join Fielder in the lead when that horse took over from Golden Sun Inside the last three furlongs. Cloudy Bay had a short advantage over Feilding racing to the straight and he came on to win handily by a length and a half from the favourite Donald Dundee, which showed speed after being well back early. He was far from disgraced in the circumstances.
Viking Water came home strongly from well back to finish third, a short length away and a neck in front of the tiring Fielder. Hal Special was beaten off fifth after being in trouble after half a mile. Ulove was the next to finish.
