“SHACKLED NEWS”
Denial By N.Z.B.C. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. The acting Director-General of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (Mr L. R. Sceats) said that any suggestion that the N.Z.B.C. news service was being shackled by the politicians was “absurd.” Referred to the corporation for comment was an article in “New Zealand Journalist,” the organ of the New Zealand Journalists’ Association, which said the corporation had instructed that a television film received here about President Sukarno was not to show him in too favourable a light. The article also claimed that the corporation accepted a number of conditions for any television interviews it had with the Prime Minister. This reference drew a reply from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), which was published yesterday. Mr Sceats said that in any interviews with the Prime Minister, the corporation had the utmost co-operation.
“The normal courtesies to the office of the Prime Minister are, however —and will continue to be—respected,” he said. So far as the other motives in the article were concerned the corporation “will carry outrits news activities and other obligations in a responsible manner.”
