BATTING FAILS

Never recovering from losing four wickets cheaply on the first day, Sydenham struggled to reach the meagre total of 158 and was made to follow on by Riccarton.

Its second innings was not a great improvement. Wickets fell regularly and when the side was all out for 191 Riccarton was left with the simple task of scoring 35 runs to win. B. J. Ellis and K. Thomson again batted soundly for Sydenham, but they were never able to get on top of accurate bowling backed up by alert fielding. The Riccarton opening bowlers, J. W. Kiddey and R. Somers, did their bit by giving Riccarton a good start by gaining wickets quickly, and tht steady D. Mclntyre bowled with his customary zeal. The umpires were Messrs L. C. and H. Johnston.
