OVERSEAS VISITORS

Two overseas motor cargo vessels are paying their first visit to Lyttelton. One is Japanese, the other British. Both are discharging. The four-year-old Shoan Maru, owned by the Matsuoka Steamship Company, is under charter to the Mitsui-O.S.K. Line and is discharging steel from Japan. The 5847-ton Shoan Maru (Shoan means “everlasting pine tree’’) is commanded by Captain Atsusi Ihara. She has a crew of 39 and a cruising speed of 15 knots.

She has discharged at North Island ports and upon completion of discharge at Lyttelton and Dunedin, she will load wool and general cargo at Wellington, Napier, Auckland and Mt. Maunganui for Japanese ports. The British cargo vessel Silverleaf is discharging general cargo from Glasgow and Liverpool. Operated by Dene’s Shipping Company, Ltd., of London, the Silverleaf is one of 11 vessels in this company but a twelfth is being built. This will be a 35,000 ore carrier. The 10,736-ton Silverleaf is a modern and well aopointed cargo carrier with European officers and an Asiatic crew. Her trade is normally worldwide and vessels of this line are not often seen in New Zealand.

She has already discharged at North Island ports. After unloading at Dunedin, the Silverleaf will load grain at Portland, Victoria, for the Continent. She is commanded by Captain E. H. B. Bloye.
