UNIVERSITY CHIMNEY

Lights, Bells Planned

Should too much smoke billow from the University of Canterbury’s eight - storey smoke stack at Ilam, warning lights would flash and bells would ring, the ViceChancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) told Ilam residents on Saturday. “I hope there will then be action,” said Dr. Pownall.

“I also hope the ringing bells will be ours, and not our neighbours ringing to tell us.”

The Government had insisted that the fuel plant be a coal-burning one, he said, but a grit arrester would be fitted. There should be no noise from the maintenance workships, which would be concealed by landscaping, said Dr. Pownall.
