’PHONES ON HIGHWAYS
‘Expense Not Justified’
A meeting of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) council decided it could not recommend the installation of telephones on motorways and State highways. The meeting was discussing a letter from the South Island Motor Union asking for the council’s view on the matter. The chairman of the roads, patrols and service committee (Mr T. W. Milliken) said if the proposal was implemented it would be very costly for the National Roads Board. It was decided that although it was desirable for stranded motorists to have ready access to a telephone, the association felt the cost of installation would not be justified at present. The council adopted a recommendation from the committee that the present type of railway crossing warning sign, the St. Andrew’s Cross, was adequate for the purpose provided it was suitably maintained.
Mr Milliken said many signs were dirty and obviously in need of attention.
