TOURS WITH S. AFRICA

Justification Doubted <N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. In New Zealand’s sports tours with South Africa, the New Zealand sportsman placed himself in a situation in opposition to many of his existing attitudes and motives, Mr R. H. T. Thompson, of the University of Canterbury, told the Science Congress today.

“The continuance of such tours is justified, it is argued, in the interests of converting the South African to a more liberal political viewpoint,” said Mr Thompson in his paper on resistance to social change.

“The situation, however. Is so structured that any modification of attitudes arising out of the tours is more, likely to be found on the part of New Zealanders.”
