Canada’s Projects For Centenary
OTTAWA. Canada’s federal and provincial governments are planning to spend more than IM mHUen dollars on bnildings t» commemorate the centenary of Confederation An 1987. The 1967 world’s fair twill open in Montreal, while a national library and a performing arts centre are being built In Ottawa.
Other projects, to be (completed in Ottawa after 1967 but still considered part of the centenary programme include a 20 million dollar museum of human and natural history, a 10 million dollar museum of sciences and technology, and a new, 25 (million dollar national art, gallery.
Spending by the Federal Government in Ottawa, including the 10 million dollar library and the 19 million (dollar pierforming arts centre, will come to nearly 85 (m illion dollars.
Helped by grants of 2,500,000 dollars each frjom the Federal Government similar buildings will be going] up in many of the provincial capitals.
In St John’s, provincial capital of Newfoundland,; a 5 million dollar arts and ’ cultural centre is to be bui'fi . Nova Scotia will celebrate the centenary by opening a medical centre in Halifax and several and libraries. Prince Edward Idland’s major contribution is the “Fathers of Confedeqation" Memorial Centre, opened by Queen Elizabeth in Charlottetown last October.
New Brunswick is spending its federal grant on neiw government offices in Fijedericton to relieve building space in historic buildings dor an exhibition of archives. Tentative plans ateo Include restoration of an old military camp and building of an aquarium in Saint John. Quebec will build a conservatory of music. Ontario’s main project is a centre of science and technology on 189 acres in Toronto the first phase of wineh will eoat 5 million dollars. Toronto’s major mmuapal project is a centre
for the performing arts. Parks, community centres and municipal buildings are also planned.
Manitoba will have a new arts centre to Winnipeg and an auditorium and centenary building at Brandon. Alberta is starting work in Edmonton on a museum and archives building which will take 14 yean to complete. Edmonton’s municipal project is a 2,400;000dollar library. A 1,250,0Md011ar planetarium, a hall of natural sciences, and a recreation and community centre, are planned far Calgary. Saskatchewan is building new auditoria in Regina and Saskatoon, while British Columbia will erect a five million dollar museum in Victoria.
