Big Efficient Mills Better

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. A few large efficient saw mills would allow much better utilisation of forest sources than a lot of small inefficient ones, Mr A. P. Thomson, of the Forest Service, said at the Science Congress today.

The pattern should not be changed too quickly as small mills at present helped to maintain a high rate of timber production and provided forest owners with local markets.

These small mills also showed disadvantages of inaccurate sawing, absence of technical knowledge, ignorance of accepted grading methods and lack of marketing ability.
