PLANNING SCHEME
Use Of More Land Sought
A specific, departure from the Riccarton Borough Council's planning scheme was sought by H. W. Smith. Ltd., timber merchant and ioiner. in an application heard bv a committee of the council last evening.
Mr P. T. Mahon, on behalf of the applicant, sought the use of land in Darvel street as a customer parking area and as access additional to existing access from Riccarton road, for commercial vehicles.
The applicant’s factory in Riccarton road was declared an existing use in a residential area bv the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board, in spite of submissions that Riccarton road was expected to carrv added traffic in the next 20 years and should therefore be protected. Mr Mahon said that the granting of the application would mean that commercial vehicles, including articulated vehicles, would no longer have to reverse on to Riccarton road, and also there would be added parking for employees. In seeking the use of the additional land the company was meeting a major objection placed before the board when the. company was declared an existing use. Several objectors to the application were heard by the committee. Two residents of Darvel street objected on the ground that, if the application were granted, traffic in what was predominantly a residential street would increase, to the detriment of the residents.
