New Brighton Zoning

Sir, —Behind the meeting held at New Brighton, at which protest was made regarding the proposed rezoning of Withells Island, was, no doubt, the fear of a possible major shopping centre in the area. This centre could well be a threat to existing businesses. Such a development in the area highlights the growth that Saturday trading has reached in New Brighton with the massive support of city residents on Saturdays. The original intention of Saturday shopping in New Brighton was to supply food for week-enders. It has gone far beyond that and is now a free-for-all. The authorities must now surely face the issue as to whether all classes of trading, possibly extended, are to continue at New Brighton. If so, the same privileges should be accorded other businesses in the city area. The present arrangement is totally unjust.—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. February 16, 1965.
