OLYMPIC REPORT

N.Z. Must Improve (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb.. 16. New Zealand will have to improve its standards for Olympic Games. This was stated by the team manager at Tokyo, Sir William Stevenson, in his official report which was published at a meeting of the Olympic and Empire Games Association’s executive tonight.

Sir William said that those who wish to participate should work harder and sacrifice more.

He said that too many members of the team were just happy to do their best but it must be emphasised that at Olympic Games the best was not good enough. Sir William’s only comment on the controversial bowing incident was that all closing ceremonies should be the same as opening ceremonies—not unofficial as it was at Tokyo, but official. The report asked for stricter medical examinations before the team leaves, and that the selectors should have the power to call for special trials before selection. Sir William said the team doctor attended to 454 cases for the 80-strong team, and a masseur would be of great benefit in future teams. A woman should be sent with female gymnastic teams.
