Bowls Points System
'THE Manning Cup for the x 1964-65 season is now completed and it is surprising how many bowlers who have been playing for years do not understand the points system. These bowlers have their game on Saturday and, if their particular rink has won, they imagine they have won but, if the other half of their team loses and their aggregate score is less than that of their opponents, they have lost. This cup is a team competition and two rinks make a team. Each dub is allotted 24 points each Saturday for winning all its games, with a proportional reduction for each loss. In addition, each club receives a half-point for each team win, a bonus. This is not perhaps an ideal system of scoring, but it is difficult to imagine a
better one because of the uneveness of the entries and their size. For instance, take the hypothetical case of a large club with 12 teams. Its ratio would be two points a team plus the half-point bonus. If all 12 teams won they could score the 24 paints and the half-point bonus which, in this instance, would be an additional six points providing a maximum of 30 points. A club entering two teams would have a maximum, for winning all its games, and 25 points. This seems to even matters between dubs as the chances of a dub with two teams or less winning the maximum points are greater than a dub with 12 teams, although the bigger dub has a wider choice of selection. During the eight rounds of the Manning Cup, a dub
with two teams could be winning all its games every Saturday and score 200 points, while a dub with 12 teams would need to average 10 wins each Saturday to be with them at the finish. ‘
