TROTTING Arahina And Ulight Likely At Blenheim

Arahina and Ulight should graduate from maiden company at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s annual meeting, which opens at Blenheim tomorrow. Both are engaged twice tomorrow, but they have been drawn to meet only in the Nelson Handicap.

Arahina, a three-year-old sister to Arania, one of the fastest race mares ever, finished second in two starts at the Nelson meeting last week-end, finishing by acting as runner-up to a speedy pacer in Flight Adios last Monday.

Arahina is usually most reliable and in spite of her bad draw in the Flying Sportsmen Handicap, she should go close to gaining her first win. The firmer track at Blenheim should suit her better than the softish going she encountered at Nelson.

Most opposition to Arahina in this race may come from Copper Flam and Seafield Prince, both of which have shown promise. Eden Star and Set Sail are two others entitled to consideration. Ulight started her race career at Nelson with a second and a fourth. But for racing greenly, she would probably have won a race. Like Arahina, she has the breeding to suggest she will be a worthwhile winner later on. She is a three-year-old filly by Light Brigade from Undaunted, by U. Scott from the New Zealand Cup winner, Loyal Nurse. Her chance should come in the Pelorus Handicap. Third Chief a good fifth in the race won by Friendly Tom at Addington on January 27, is engaged only in this event. He could be the hardest for Ulight to beat. Seafield Prince, Flying Visit, and Sporting Lad are other prospects. If both Arahina and Ulight parade again in the Nelson Handicap there should be little to choose between them. This looks a fairly strong field and the pick of the others could be Eden Star, Copper Flame and Johnny Gold. The double will be run on

the Marlborough Cup and the President’s Handicap. Fair Weather is forecast and the track will be in splendid order. 2.5 p.m.—
