Frank Beard shot a six-under-par 66 yesterday to take the first round lead in the Bob Hope 100,000 dollars golf tournament. The Australians, Bruce Devlin and Bruce Crampton, and R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, all returned 725. The top Americans Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Lema—shot 70, 71 and 72 respectively. Charles had three birdies and three times went over par. He caught the trees on the dogleg seventeenth and his ball fell out of bounds.
