Soccer Profit Biggest In Ten Years

For the first time in 10 years the Canterbury Football Association can report a handsome profit on the year’s workings. In his annual statement, I the secretary-treasurer (Mr N. R. Dixon) reports that a net profit of £341 was made last year. This is a sharp contrast to losses of £663 in 1963 and £634 in 1962. “Indeed, going back over

the years, one does not find such a good result for more than a decade,” says Mr Dixon.

He states the improved position follows “the continued vigilance of the economies started in 1963, the increased gates at English Park and the co-operation of clubs in realising that their parent body cannot be run on the proverbial shoestring.”

The gate takings at English Park for 1964 were £796, compared to £509 in 1963, £562 in 1962 and £385 in 1961.

The main loss during the year was £l2B on the Jubilee dinner and ball. “Some dubs, although supporting the staging of this at the last annual meeting, thought fit to ignore this milestone in the history of their association and their lack of faith resulted in the financial loss,” comments Mr Dixon. Another big increase in the association’s income was from donations, rising from £7O in 1962 to £550 last year. “It would be wrong to pretend that all our problems are solved, but there are

grounds for a certain amount of optimism and hope for the future,” says Mr Dixon. “We should all be adult enough to admit to our own limitations and .to realise that constant bickering over small childish matters cause only discontent in our ranks. “Let us be proud of what we have achieved—the financial stability, the presence of qualified coaches, the upsurge of interest shown in the schools, the grounds and gymnasiums owned by the dubs—all these factors show a growth of th* soccer coda.”
