Victoria Street Bank
A new building for the Bank of New South Wales is being erected on the corner of Victoria and Salisbury streets and is expected to be completed early in August. Details of the building, a sketch of which appears above, were announced yesterday by Mr G. M. Simpson, manager of the Victoria street branch of the bank. The building had been designed to allow for expansion
and could be extended to the south-west side by the addition of a new wing. The building is in two parts, with the main portion on the corner housing the public space, office space, manager’s office and strong-room. The lower wing extending along Victoria street to the northwest will house the staff amenities. Constructed of reinforced concrete, the frame of the main banking building supports a roof of galvanised
steel decking on timber purlins on steel trusses. Tan bricks will be used in a Roman pattern for the frame construction of the staff quarters and the horizontal joints will be raked out to give a strong texture. The floodlit feature wall of the building will cut the comer and will be faced with coloured glazed ceramic tiles. The contractor for the building is M. F. R. Barnett, Ltd., and the architect Mr John Hall.
