SIX CALLS TO FIRES
Big Shed Badly Damaged
A fire yesterday morning badly damaged a large shed at 1038 a Colombo street. The shed, the property of Mr J. Hobday, was being used as a lawnmower repair shop. Two machines, one from Central Fire Station and the other from St. Albans, were called to the fire at 7.25 a.m. The fire apparently started inside the building, but the cause has yet to be determined. Three machines from the Central station answered a call to the Dominion Hotel. Gloucester street, at 12.51 p.m. yesterday. A leaking gas meter outside the building near the kitchens had ignited. Little damage was caused. Two machines, one from Sydenham and one from Woolston, at 2.8 p.m. answered a call to a fire on the railway embankment alongside Martindale road, Heathcote. No damage was done by the fire.
A washhouse attached to a house at 22 St. David’s street, Lyttelton, was damaged by fire yesterday. The property belongs to Mr William J. Dean. Two Lyttelton fire engines answered the call, which was received at 2.50 p.m. At 7.49 p.m. Sockburn and Sydenham firemen were called to a grass fire at the Sockburn railway yards in Haytons road. The fire did no damage. Two units from Sydenham were called to another grass fire at 66 Hunsbury avenue at 8.33 p.m., and this also was extinguished before it caused damage. It was on a property occupied by Mr Arthur Hansen.' In the last seven days the brigade has answered 51 calls. It is expected that with continued dry weather the danger of grass fires will remain high.
