CANBERRA, January 5.
Increased Indonesian confrontation pressures are expected to hasten Australia’s examination of new defence aid for Malaysia, a defence spokesman said last night.
The spokesman said that whether this would result in Australia sending extra forces to Malaysia would not be known until after the seriousness of the new threat could be fully determined. British," Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand Finance Ministers discussed long-term development and defence needs at a conference with Malaysian Government representatives in Kuala Lumpur last September. They agreed in principle to help Malaysia bridge the gap between those needs and her own ability to finance them. The latest moves by Indonesia increased the need for early consideration of the scope of assistance available. Malaysia has so far made no direct request to Australia for immediate extra defence aid. But Australia had
a clear commitment to help to defend Malaysia. This commitment could make it necessary for Australia to reach an early decision on the extent of extra aid it could provide.
