BOMBERS READY
Alert For R.A.F.
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 5.
A strong force of Royal Air Force Vbombers had been alerted to fly from Britain to Malaysia should President Sukarno carry out his invasion threat, the “Daily Sketch” reported today.
The planes, Vulcans and Victors, equipped, to operate in a conventional role, had been brought to a state of high readiness at airfields in East Anglia and the Midlands, the newspaper said.
Their crews had received a preliminary briefing on a possible move and had been ordered not to get out of contact with their bases.
The “Daily Sketch” said that by using the existing chain of Middle East and Indian Ocean staging airfields, the 500-mile-an-hour V-bomb-ers could be moved to Malayasia within 24 hours. They carried a big bomb load—3s 1000-pounders in the case of the Victors and slightly less for the Vulcans.
