Victoria Wins Outright
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, January 5. Victoria hammered home its advantage over South Australia on the last day of a Sheffield Shield match in Melbourne today and won outright by 111 runs with 27 minutes to spare.
South Australia was left to score 325 runs in 220 minutes, and was dismissed for 213.
Victoria again batted at a fast rate this morning and put on 135 runs in 110 minutes. W. M. Lawry, Victoria’s captain, made 87 not out in 137 minutes, with seven fours.
Scores: Victoria 492 and 174 for two declared (W. Lawry 87 not out, I. Red-path 65), South Australia 342 and 213 (N. Dansie 68, D. McAllister 43; K. Stackpole four for 79, D. Anderson three for 21).
O'Neill In Form In spite of a lightning 96 in 99 minutes by N. C. O’Neill, New South Wales failed in a stirring bid to defeat Queensland outright in a Sheffield Shield match at Sydney today.
Set 306 runs to score an outright victory in 197 minutes New South Wales had only one wicket in hand at close of play and was struggling to avoid outright defeat. New South Wales won the match on the first innings.
O’Neill, although handicapped by a thigh injury, gave a glorious exhibition of controlled hitting to collect two sixes and 14 fours.
Scores: New South Wales 360 and 258 for nine (O’Neill 96, R. Simpson 53; Duncan four for 76) Queensland 148 and 517 for six declared (P. Burge 242 not out, S. Trimble 85, T. Veivers 77)
