BOWLS 19 Qualifiers In Centre’s Fours Tourney

Nineteen of the 88 fours which entered the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Christmas fours tournament qualified with six or more wins when section play ended yesterday. E. Colville (St. Albans) and E. Trenberth (Christchurch), the only unbeaten skips at the end of the second day, won both games yesterday to come through the eight games of section play without loss.

Of the 15 fours which entered the last day with five wins, 12 went on to postsection play. R. Rickerby (Riccarton). who had five wins at the close of play on Monday, lost his two games yesterday and did not qualify. In his first game yesterday he met J. Sinclair (Woolston W.M.C.), who had only one win at that stage. Rickerby lost 20-19. Rickerby then lost, 24-7, to C. Holland (Fendalton), who had only three wins before this game. J. Mills (Cashmere), who had four wins when play began yesterday, met W. Ditford (R.S.A.), winner of five. Ditford failed dismally in this game, and lost 24-11. Both Mills and Ditford had one game left to score a win to go forward. The luck of the draw favoured both. Mills met R. Cox (Wooiston W.M.C.), Who had only two wins, and won 28-18, and Ditford met A. Cain (Christchurch W.M.C.), who had only one win, and romped home, 33-18.

Only One Qualifies

Much interest centred on the final game in section D. Bef ore play began there were five fours with four wins and two with five. The latter two, R. Thomas (Sydenham) and C. Ashton (Canterbury), appeared likely to be beaten, and this would have brought in five qualifiers. However, Ashton in the closing stages of his game gained the advantage and beat W. Heaton (Mona Vale), 19-16. Ashton became the only skip to qualify in this section, as Thomas lost, 20-16, to G. Miller (Christchurch W.M.C.), who had won two games. W. Dailey (Fendalton) must have felt full of confidence when he stepped on to the green yesterday morning requiring only one win to qualify. His first match was against A. Bills (Christchurch W.M.C.) who had won only two games. Dailey’s hopes of an early qualification were dashed when Bills won, 22-18. Dailey then met R. Divers (Mona Vale), who had his first win in ' the previous round, and qualified by winning, 23-12. A. Horsfall (Shirley), who needed two wins yesterday to qualify, did so with comparative ease when he beat W. Andersen (Mona Vale), 21-14, and J. Simon (Canterbury), 18-14.

A. Bastyer (Rangiora), who needed one win to qualify, met R. Lulham (Christchurch), who was in a simi-

lar position. Basher won, 19-12. Lulham met J. O’Halloran (Opawa) in the last game, and qualified by winning, 23-14. A very close finish was seen in the game between Lulham and Dailey in the first round of post-section play. The Christchurch four skipped by Lulham won the first six heads to lead 9-0. Over the next three heads Dailey’s Fendalton four scored six points, but it was Christchurch all the way over the next five heads, which gave it seven points and a 16-6 lead.

Over the next six heads Fendalton did better than Christchurch to score eight points to two, but with one head left to play Christchurch seemed the certain winner with its 18-14 lead. However, Fendalton drew five shots, to win by 19 points to 18. The other 13 qualifiers had byes in the first round. Results were:— Section A, Shirley Seventh Round.—T. w.
