FIRST WIN ON TOUR
Hignett 6/55 For R XI
“The Press" Special Service LEVIN, December 29.
The touring Canterbury B cricket team won the first match of its northern tour, beating Horowhenua by six wickets at Levin today. Set the task of scoring 169 runs in 108 minutes, B. A. Bolton and J. A. Mills batted briskly in a bright opening stand and then M. Randle hit aggressively to score 51.
Horowhenua batted steadily this morning. L. Buckenham scored a good 55 and D. Heml batted solidly for 40. For a while the Canterbury bowling looked to be mastered but once E. R. Hignett was brought into the attack matters changed quickly. Flighting the ball well and gaining quite sharp turn, Hignett ran through the batting to take six wickets. G. A. Bartlett again bowled with hostility and speed and although he failed to take a wicket he was a disruptive influence to the batsmen.
Scores.—Horowhenua 166 and 186/7 dec (Buckenham 55, Hemi 40; Hignett 6/55), Canterbury B 187 and 169/4 (Mills 77, Randle 51).’
