CRICKET YOUTH

The H. 5.0.8. player Garry Urlwin, is one of the fastest bowlers in the boy’s competition. It is pleasing to see that Garry’s accuracy has improved immensely since the begining of the season; although his run could be cut down without sacrifice of speed. Without being spectacular, the Xavier A, batsman David Fraser plays some very good shots. When he learns to hit the ball harder, David should score many runs.

Raymond Budhia, the captain of the Lancaster Park A, side, is one of the best allround players in the competition. Raymond bowls very accurate off-breaks and is an attacking right-hand batsman. On December 19 he even kept wickets for a while and did a very good job. Probably the most prolific run-getter in the Saturday morning competition is the Riccarton A player, David Kennedy. In the last match David made 37 before being run out. His average for- the season is now about 33. The Burnside A team is fortunate in having a player

with as much ability as John Calder. John, as well as being an exceptionally good opening bowler, is a hard hitting left-hand batsman and plays some very good-looking shots especially on the drive. A young, but promising, batsman is the RiccartonMarist C player Wayne McWhister. Wayne is a fairly small boy but is capable of hitting the ball quite hard; and is particularly impressive when playing shots off the back foot.

Victor Saywell took two classic catcehs which would do credit to any grade of cricket while playing in the schoolboy grades on December 19 Victor has learned well the wisdom of being on the move when the batsman makes his stroke. He was thus able to use for forward momentum as the start of two spectacular dive catcehs. Both catches were on his left-hand but Victor got both hands to them in mid-air neatly forward rolled and came up holding the ball. He hurt a hand making the first catch but did not flinch when the second hard chance on the on side came a few minutes later.
