JAZZ BAND TO TOUR
Arts Festival Attraction
The well-known traditional jazz group, the Dutch Swing College Band, is the latest addition to the list of attractions in Christchurch during the Pan Pacific Arts Festival week. The band will begin a comprehensive tour of New Zealand in Wellington on February 22 and end it with a concert in Christchurch on March 6.
Founded in 1945 by the clarinettist, Peter Schilperpoot, the band has long been one of the most popular in the genre. Since 1960 its tours have taken it to many countries, including Britain, America, Africa and Italy, where it appeared at the 1961 San Remo jazz festival. It has six members—Schilperpoot (clarinet, piano and baritone saxophone), Ray Kaart (trumpet), Dickie Kaart (trombone), Arie Ligthart (guitar and banjo), Koos Serierse (bass) and Lu Ssanet (drums).
