MEAT FOR U.S.
No Quotas In 1965
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 29. The United States Secretary of Agriculture, Mr Orville Freeman, said today it would not be necessary to impose quotas on meat imports in 1965. He said that no appreciable increase in imports was expected. Australia and New Zealand are suppliers of the American market. Legislation passed this year directed the President to impose import restrictions if there was the likelihood of a big increase in foreign supplies which could depress American prices. Mr Freeman said in a statement today that imports in 1965 were expected to amount to about 733 million lb. This compares with 1048 million lb in 1963, and an estimated 718 million lb this year.
