Fine Replaces Suspension

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 28 The suspension imposed on P. K. Cathro to January 9 by stewards of the Auckland Racing Club on Saturday was reduced by the Auckland District Committee today to a fine of £l5. The District Committee found that Cathro had not been the requisite distance in front while riding Mantovani, but in view of the evidence of G F. Hughes that this was not the primary cause of the change of direction of Golden Defoe, it was decided to alter the penalty. The committee, after reviewing evidence and seeing the film, found that Cathro had moved across the field, but accepted Hughes's evidence that his sudden switching of the line of Golden Defoe was due to his desire to take up a trailing position off the fence and was not caused by Interference from Cathro.
