Cricket And Bowls Tour
Two Australian Commercial Travellers sports teams, whose members come from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, arrived in Christchurch last evening. The teams will compete against New Zealand provincial commercial travellers bowls and cricket teams while in this country. The cricket team will travel to Dunedin this evening, returning to play against a Canterbury team on January 2 and 4. The bowlers will play several matches in Christ-
church during their nine-day stay in the city. The cricket match against Canterbury will be the fourth, with matches being played on a home-and-away basis every two years. The previous match played in Christchurch, in 1960, was a one-day encounter won by the Australians after 600 runs had been scored during the day’s play. Although little is known about the touring team the Canterbury XT will contain five former minor representative or senior grade players.
R. Copp played senior cricket for both High School Old Boys and Lancaster Park and represented Canterbury B; R, Campbell is a former Marlborough captain and D. Cunningham played for Air Force during the war. D. Watson and C. Henderson have had first grade experience. The local team has been a leading contender for Mercantile A grade honours over the last few years and could have an advantage by playing on a wicket it is more accustomed to. The match will be played at Hagley Park.
