Big Business

Sheep stealing is big business in South Africa, according to Dalgety and New Zealand Loan’s news service. In a single year 138,000 sheep and cattle were stolen and in 1963-64 there were 11,130 stock theft prosecutions. The “Wool Grower,” published in Pretoria, said doubledecker lorries equipped with searchlights were being used by organised sheep rustlers on raids on Eastern Cape farms. Stolen sheep and cattle were being hidden by Basuto tribesmen in almost inaccessible caves, some of which held up to 300 head of stock.
