SPECIAL TV PROGRAMME
Victoria Sq. Scenes A television crew from CHTV 3, with an outside broadcast van and associated equipment, spent much of Thursday evening filming parts of a special Christmas programme in Victoria square. Two of the three television cameras were set up on the veranda of Hays store, and the third was on the veranda of the National Bank of New Zealand at the intersection of Armagh and Colombo streets.
Filming started early in the evening, when announcers interviewed passers-by on the footpaths, and viewers were shown general scenes of the busy city streets.
Several motorists during the evening found the sight of the television cameras at work so interesting they negl lected to look where they ■were going, and one observer : counted about nine minor I bumps at the intersection 'during the evening, although 'not all of them were caused Iby drivers watching the cameras. In most cases the worst damage was a broken headI light. Except for a short announcement at a few minutes ' before 10 p.m., which was telecast live, all the street scenes were recorded on videotape, and played back later as part of the "Christmas Wassail” programme. The programme was intended to give viewers a look at Christmas in Canterbury, iand included interviews and 'scenes of Ashburton anu Timaru, interviews in Christchurch, and even some infor- ! mation on Christmas in the Antarctic.
