£3 A WEEK RISE
Mt. Isa Mines Workers (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BRISBANE, Dec. 25. The Queensland Industrial Commission yesterday granted all employees of Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., a £3-a-week prosperity rating. Industrial observers said this could hasten the end of the contract miners’ dispute which began on August 24 and is now in its eighteenth week. The loading according to the company will cost it £600,000 a year.
It will apply to all workers on the field including 1800 employed by private contractors.
Before the strike, Mt. Isa mines employed more than 4000. The dispute hearing presided over by the commission will be held on January 6.
Originally, underground miners at Mt. Isa had asked for a £4-a-week rise, which was refused by the commission. This led to the dispute.
