IMPORTING COPPER

(N Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY, Dec. 25. Australia has arranged to import more than £2O million worth of copper because of the shortage caused by the Mount Isa dispute and increasing demand. The imports will make a considerable impact on Australia’s overseas reserves. In previous years Australia has exported about £l7 million worth of copper. The price of copper products in Australia will lean again next month because of the high price of imported copper—£6oo a ton compared with £340 a ton for Aust’.a-lian-produced copper. Manufacturers introduced a surcharge on all copper products at the rate of £56 a ton on October 1 to cover tbe price difference. This surcharge was raised to £l4O a ton last month.
