African Migration
Sir, —Would you please check the figures given in your report of the exodus of Africans from their homelands? The report claims that 250,000 Africans have left Portuguese Guinea this year, and also that 160,000 Watusi tribesmen have left Ruanda. There is an implication in the report that there has been a small exodus from South Africa. I understood that more Africans are entering South Africa than are leaving. —Yours, etc., SUSPICIOUS. December 6, 1964. [The Consul-General for South Africa (Mr A. J. Van Lille) replies: “There has never been any exodus of Bantu (Africans) from South Africa. The 1957 census showed that more than 750,000 foreign-born Bantu were then present in South Africa, and this figure has since increased to more than 1,000,000. More than 20,000 Africans from neighbouring territories yearly infiltrate across the borders of the Republic in order to share in the unparalleled prosperity, excellent labour conditions and social services of South Africa.”]
