Luggage On Buses

Sir, —Decrepit and noisy as many of the Wellington city buses seem to be, they do have luggage racks inside for light articles, and outside, at the back where they hang the prams, a capacious recess for heavier stuff, suitcases, etc. The latter amenity, particularly, might be useful here, notably for people going to and from the inter-island steamers at Lyttelton; for, thanks to our new road tunnel. the bus service can be just as convenient and agreeable as the railway. Incidentally, on Monday last in Wellington, just as the evening rush hour was beginning, there were scores of cars parked three deep along Customhouse quay, the owners of many of them resignedly reading a paper until A should happen along to move his car so that B, C, D, etc., could follow suit and extricate themselves and join the mad rush for home, or a few quick ones en route. Presumably, moreover, they do it day after day. —Yours, etc., ILAM. December 9, 1964. [The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) said: “None of Wellington’s modern buses have these fitments; nor have they the large opening at the rear of the bus, as it has not been found satisfactory for modern chassis design.”]
