League Mark Abolished
The New Zealand Rugby League Council has agreed to remove the mark (and its subsequent free kick) from its rule book. The council supported a move from the English Rugby League which considered that the mark became “a relic of the past” when possession became more important than ground gained. Unlike the Rugby Union rule, no points could be scored from a mark in Rugby League. The player taking the mark was obliged to kick the ball over the mark, but if it went into touch on the full a scrum was formed on the mark.
