Good Greens Appreciated
For some years the Canterbury club has had the reputation of possessing probably the best greens in the district. This happy state of affairs is credited, in the main, to the advice and guidance given by Mr G. Mantel!, an enthusiastic student of 'all things pertaining to the good order and condition of playing surfaces.
Some months ago the Elmwood club sought his
advice on the state of its greens and a vast improvement is now apparent. Proof of Elmwood’s appreciataion of the work done by Mr Mantell was provided recently when the president (Mr H. Poole) presented him with a gold wristlet watch. Mr Mantell told club members that he gave advice freely, but the result had been reached through the help and co-operation of others, particularly the greenkeeper, Mr F. Endacott. Be that as it may, it is certain that Elmwood now lays claim to excellent greens and the club’s gesture made very plain its opinion of the principal character behind the big improvement.
