Left At The Post

Sir, —Last Thursday I was waiting for the 9.50 a.m. bus, Papanui to Cashmere Hills, at Bealey avenue and Victoria street. The Papanui bus slowly drew into the kerb just behind the Fendalton bus. The driver neither stopped his bus nor opened the door to let me in. He just left me standing on the kerb. Mine was a six-section fare and quite worth stopping for. Is it any wonder the buses are not paying, apart from the inconvenience to the travelling public? I feel sorry for the bus manager as his job consists of keeping the travelling public passive and keeping 300-odd bus-drivers at work at the same time. As he has no slump to help him on his way, what chance has he got? —Yours, etc, A HOPEFUL PASSENGER.

December 14, 1964. [The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies: “The Cashmere bus should have taken the passenger, and I extend my apologies to the passenger for what happened. The driver was inattentive to his duty, and could have been dealt with if the passenger had sent a written complaint to us within 48 hours of the occurrence as required by the Transport Workers Award.”]
