POPULAR SECRETARY OF LABOUR RETIRES
(Keu> Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, December 21. “One of the most popular public servants New Zealand has ever had” was a term used to describe the retiring Secretary of Labour (Mr H. L. Bockett) at a function in Wellington today when he was bidden farewell. At the function, Mr Bockett was given the gold medal of the Netherlands Immigra-
tion Fund—only the third ever awarded by the Netherlands Government. The Minister for the Netherlands (Mr E. F. M. van Hail) told Mr Bockett that it was for his help in promoting Netherlands immigration since 1947. Tributes to Mr Bockett’s approach to conciliation and his work were made by representatives of employers’ and workers’ organisations.
From Mr Bockett, with more than 17 years as Secretary of Labour behind him, came a note of personal happiness—“Now I’ll no longer have reporters ring me up after midnight to get the latest on industrial disputes.”
