FLYING SCHOLARSHIP.—The first group of 14 candidates for a sponsored flying scholarship organised by the North Canterbury branch of the Canterbury Aero Club were taken for their test flights at Rangiora on Saturday. The first test flight was made by Mr R. W. Butler, Ashley Forest (left), who is shown having the controls of the club's new Piper Cherokee explained to him by one of the club’s flying instructors, Mr C. J. Elliott. Three girls were among those tested on Saturday. There were nearly 100 applicants for the scholarship from persons between 15 and 56 from Kaikoura to Christchurch. Candidates will make test flights from Harewood also.
