IMPORTED SIRE

Gate Keeper At Mosgiel Stud “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, Dec. 16. The breeding industry in the South Island is likely to receive a boost with the arrival in Wingatui of the richly bred Gate Keeper, which was purchased in England by Mr G. B. Thomson for his Mosgiel Park Stud. Gate Keeper, which was foaled in 1961, is a son of Alcide and the Precipitation mare Hortentia. He did not race as a two-year-old, but he made his mark as a stayer the following season with two impressive wins over a mile and a half. On both occasions he recorded track records for the distance. Gate Keeper still has his winter coat and shows the effects of his long journey, but in colour and conformation he is a typical off-spring of the mighty Hyperion, champion sire of England on five occasions. His maternal granddam. Hydrangea (a daughter of Hyperion) is a three-quarter blood sister to Ruthless, which was twice champion sire in New Zealand, and is a half-sister to the Derby winner, Watling Street, and to Garden Path, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas. Gate Keeper replaces Underwood, which stood for several seasons at Mr Thomson’s stud.
