‘SHOT IN BACK’

S. Vietnam Charge (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BRISBANE, December 16. American soldiers were being shot in the back by “friendly” South Vietnamese troops, a Brisbane politician recently returned from Vietnam told reporters. Mr Kevin Cairns, Liberal member of the State Parliament, said: “A lot of American soldiers have been shot in the back—not by the Viet Cong but by the S.outh Vietnamese. “In many cases American and Nationalist Chinese soldiers are guarding each other’s safety against the South Vietnamese troops.” Mr Cairns said the South Vietnamese people had had “the guts knocked out of them.” “Their morale is gone,” he said. Mr Cairns, who spent four days in Saigon after attending the Asian People’s AntiCommunist League conference ’n Formosa, said he was not impressed with the attitude of certain senior Vietnamese Government officials he had met in Saigon.
