SAW GUARD REMOVED

£3O Fine On Company (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 16. A 20-year-old trainee in a big Auckland factory was told by the foreman to remove a guard from a circular saw, said Mr C. P. Dolbel (Labour Department) in the Magistrate’s Court today. The youth’s hand came in contact with the saw and his thumb was lacerated, said Mr Dolbel.

Hygrade Packaging Company admitted the charge of allowing an unguarded saw to be used and was fined £3O by Mr F. McCarthy, S.M. The Magistrate dismissed with costs another two charges relating to the same saw.

Mr Dolbel said the inspector of factories was very concerned about the foreman instructing the youth to remove the guard. He said the company had very big factories in Auckland and was probably the biggest concern of its kind in New Zealand. The saw was used for trimming metal pipe. On the day of the accident the youth was using it to cut wood, but there were two other properly guarded saws in the factory for this work.
