Manufacturers To Put Case On Freight Rates

The industrial promotion committee of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association is to prepare a case for differential railway freight rates for submission to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). The president of the association (Mr R. G. Pearce), who said this at a meeting of the association’s council told members, that he knew of precedents in New Zealand for differential railway freight rates. The association, he said, wanted one rate for goods moving south and another rate for goods moving north. The problem was a national one, and should be a national objective. “We would be asking for something we feel would be a vital step forward towards the development of Canterbury and, on a wider basis, the South Island" he said. Mr R. H. Stewart: It is a bold, forward Government movement, if the Government is bold enough to do it Mr Pearce: Such a step is not without precedents both within New Zealand and overseas.

A report by the Industrial promotion committee, adopted by the council, said of freight rates, that it was apparent the Railways Department was solely concerned with its own internal economics.
