Xavier College Prizes Presented

Secondary education was not to be valued in terms of a "stop gap” until a boy was 15; or the “wages or salary” vocation end, said the headmaster (the Rev. Brother Maurice) at the annual prizegiving ceremony of Xavier College in the Civic Theatre last evening. He said it was disquieting to find that only one boy in three reached the sixth form. “We deplore the attitude of those parents who allow the whims and fancies of the adolescent to influence them in the all important decision of when to leave school,” said Brother Maurice. Examinations were still the subject of much controversy. One school of thought would abolish them altogether. Others regarded them as the only criterion in assessing the efficiency of a school. "Probably a suitable combination of examination and accrediting is the best gauge of achievement, for it Js undeniable that examlmtions are a powerful incentive to regular and systematic work,” said Brother Maurice.
