BILLIARDS Indian Now Only Unbeaten Player
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 8. W. Jones, the brilliant Indian player, became the outright favourite to win the world amateur billiards championship when he beat the Englishman, J. Karnehm, at Pukekohe tonight.
Previously Jones and Karnehm were the only unbeaten players of the 10 in the round-robin tournament. Scoring seven centuries to
one, Jones beat Karnehm, 1781 to 1040. This dramatic match even surpassed for excitement the world record break of 518 set by the 30-year-old South African, M. Francisco, earlier in the day when he beat A. E. Redmond, of New Zealand. In the other match, A. Nolan (England) beat the Pakistani, M. Mavalwala. Karnehm scored a 65, 50. 44 and 109, to lead Jones. 298104. But Karnehm could not keep Jones quiet for ever, and the Indian broke loose with breaks of 170, 93, 53 and then a superb 131. He was then well clear, 606 to 384. However, Karnehm fought back, and by the end of the first session was within striking distance, 553-656. At the start of the evening session, Karnehm twice started useful breaks, twice missed difficult shots, and twice left Jones an easy position. This was all the Indian needed. In five consecutive visits to the table he scored 155, 110, 23, 119 and 51, in one patch scoring 465 points to Karnehm’s nine. Details: Jones 1781 <lB7, 107, 15S, 148. 131, US. 110), Karnehm 104 n (109). Francisco 2061 <5lB. 519, 135, 128, 126, 123, 114), Redmond 02H. Nolan 1471 (178, 118), Mavala wala 851.
