Highest Scorer To Lead Pakistan Tour
(N.ZJP. A.-Reuter—Copyright) KARACHI, November 8. Hanif Mohammed, holder of the world’s record individual cricket score and veteran of 41 tests, will lead a 17-man Pakistan cricket team in a tour of Australia and New Zealand this year, the Pakistan Cricket Control Board announced in Karachi today.
After his selection the 30-year-old Hanif told reporters that the team consisted of young players. “We hope to do well,” he said.
This will be Pakistan’s first tour of Australia and New Zealand since it was given test status by the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1951.
The consistent run-getting Hanif is certain to be the biggest attraction. His 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur six years ago bettered the
record score held by Australia’s Sir Donald Bradman of 452 not out set in 1929.
Ali, Intikhab Alam, Asif Eqbal, Perves Sjjad, Massodul Hasan, Ghulam Abbas, Mohammed Ilyas, Afaq Hussain, Arif Butt, Farroq Hamid, Mufassiml Haq and Shafqat Rana. The team will assemble at Karachi for a 13-day training camp and leave for Australia on November 24 to play four matches there, including a four-day test from December 4. The team will begin a sixweek New Zealand tour on December 31 and will play three tests and eight other games.
Saeed Ahmed, the vicecaptain, who has played in 25 tests, and Javed Burki (14 tests), the former Oxford blue who led Pakistan’s 1962 tour of England, are others from whom the team will look for runs. Nasin-Ul-GhanL a lefthanded all-rounder, one of the world’s most accurate slow bowlers, who has played in 22 tests, is the most experienced bowler in the side.
